Organic
cotton is an act of love. To the Earth. To People. To Ourself.
Conventional cotton production uses more chemicals per unit area than
any other crop and is responsible for the use of almost 25% of the
world's pesticides. All the chemicals used in the processing of cotton
contribute even more to air, surface and water pollution,
and increasingly strong fertilizers contribute to serious sterilization
of the land.
All this translates as well in skin irritations and too often in
tragedies in the poorest countries where cotton is cultivated: the
dramatic rates of suicides among the farmers who cannot pay back loans
taken to pay for highly expensive pesticides and fertilizers. This is
the daily reality of the countryside of India, where 70% of her people
live, depending on agriculture.
In our
search for creating something that could be an act of love and respect
toward the land and people of India, beside those who choose to
use our clothes and linen, we have been inspired by a project sustaining
1,000 families of farmers of Madhya Pradesh in central India, who took
the courage to cultivate organic cotton.
We have been also blessed enough to find wonderful people in Gujarat,
west India, the birth-place of Gandhi, who courageously followed their
passion to revitalize the ancient methods of Indian herbal dyeing, and
of whitening by the action of the Sun and Nature alone.
We are happy to develop for you new projects with these fabrics. |
